Nursing care
Nursing homes are managed by registered nurses and are the only places apart from hospitals that have registered nurses on duty 24 hours a day. Around 25% of the nursing staff are registered nurses and the remainder are care assistants. Nursing homes care for people who are more dependent than those in residential homes. People who are unable to walk or move unaided from bed to chair are cared for as are people who require specialist equipment such as hoists to enable them to bathe. If the person has a wound such as a leg ulcer or a bedsore the registered nurses employed by the Home dress the wound. If the person requires help to eat this is available.
Nightingale is in a unique position to offer rehabilitation to enable people to get well after illness or injury, palliative care and care for people who are dying. In addition to nursing services we also have our own physiotherapy and occupational therapy departments. Outlined below is the type of care normally provided in nursing homes:
- Full assistance with eating and drinking including gastronomy feeding
- Full bladder care including caring for people who have urinary catheters
- Full bowel care including giving enemas and suppositories
- Full wound care including dressing wounds, treatment of pressure sores and care to reduce the risk of pressure sores developing
- Full assistance with moving from bed to chair etc using mechanical aids such as hoists and other equipment
- Full assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming
- Monitoring condition and 24-hour nursing supervision and care
- Palliative care and pain control including giving injections
Dementia Care
Dementia is a common condition in old age. 25% of people aged 85 and over have dementia. People with dementia suffer from a condition that is currently incurable. It causes profound difficulty in processing information. This difficulty often leads to behaviour that people consider strange but that makes sense to the person with dementia. People with dementia require very special sensitive care from specialist staff who understand how to provide the best possible levels of care.
At Nightingale the Lady Wolfson and Harry & Abe Sherman Floors in our Main Building provide care for people with dementia. These two floors are run as one unit. A dementia care specialist nurse manages our dementia care.
